Get a head start on the ski season or find a place to spend the holidays! Most of our favorite ski resorts in northern Japan open around mid-November to mid-December.
Open dates are tentative depending on whether there’s enough snow so be sure to check the resorts’ websites first before heading up.

New Year Torchlight Skiing: Dec. 31 – Jan. 1
Take part in Japan’s biggest torchlight skiing! 150 skiers and snowboarders will be riding down as the clock strikes twelve; register by Dec. 29 and you could be part of this spectacular occasion. There will also be fireworks and a New Year “Lucky Draw” where you could win prizes.

New Year Sunrise Skiing: Jan. 1
Catch the first sunrise of the year with the Summit Express, which runs from 6 a.m. on New Year’s Day. It is ¥1,800 for one lift ride and ¥3,500 for the whole morning (6 a.m. – 12 p.m.)

NAGANO
Shin’etsu Shizenkyo Super Value Tickets
Get more for less with these limited vouchers exchangeable for one-day lift passes at 21 ski resorts around the Shin’etsu Shizenkyo region in Nagano and Niigata. Each booklet (¥23,000) comes with five tickets per book and can be purchased online or at the Shin’etsu Shizenkyo Activity Center at Iiyama Station on the Hokuriku bullet train line. Depending on the resort, you can exchange them for resort packages including lift passes, rentals, meals, access to hot springs and souvenirs.
